The Summer Leaders Convening in Albuquerque, during mid-June, was an opportunity to come together and celebrate who we are as a union, who we are as a collective voice for the betterment of students and staff, and who we want to be moving forward. Yes, there were some tears along the way from exhaustion and frustration, but there were also many moments of hope and excitement about NEA-NM being the foremost authority in helping to shape the future of public education in our beautiful state.
We focused on several groups including local leadership teams, association representatives within the buildings, new educators and those dedicated to Education Justice. There was also an overarching theme of social and racial justice and working towards equity at all levels of our education system.
So, how does this affect you?
As NEA-NM works to strengthen our local leadership and members around critical issues, our collective voice is amplified. With continued goals around respectable pay, affordable healthcare, adequate staffing and planning time, along with many other important issues, we must be a healthy and fully functional organization. The Summer Leaders Convening is a piece of that overall picture. However, YOUR voice, YOUR membership and YOUR active participation will be a key ingredient as we move to create the changes we know are absolutely necessary.
Just as the convening participants told their stories and made a Call to Action, we invite you to do the same. Get involved in your union and invite others to join. And please don’t forget to sign our 80/20 Petition regarding affordable healthcare for all public school employees. Lastly, and most important, thank you for being a member!
